Quick Review: Perplexity for Marketing Copywriters


Review methodology: At the top (here) I will include my original prompt, followed by mentions of any editing and/or reprompts done. I will note how many tries it took to get it to say what I want it to say, how useful I think it might be to marketing copywriters, and my final thoughts on that particular AI-assisted copywriting machine before sharing the completed version generated by the LLM.

Thoughts: Perplexity was last updated in Dec 2023, and it runs on the (fast being made) obsolete GPT 3.5 model and Anthropic’s Claude model, among others. It defines itself as a “A conversational search engine” and that’s a pretty accurate description. 

I honestly use it more for research (and links) than I do for generating creatives. It has a better flow I feel compared to Gemini. Also, I give it bonus points for generating content in Markdown instead of HTML (get with the program already Google, this is embarrassing!). 

Personally, I really like Perplexity’s default writing style, as it feels a bit more straightforward and neutral, unlike Gemini who sounds really way too pep for my liking. The word choices are subtle but impactful to me, which is very scary because for a marketing copywriter, Perplexity is probably the closest that comes to mimicking an overworked, exploited, exhausted-but-not-ready-to-give-up marketing copywriter at their most neutral. Yes I think it can put a lot of us out of a job if we don’t master it first. 

Cons: However, unlike Gemini where you can share just the prompt itself or the entire thread, in Perplexity, sharing the prompt link will start the reader at the prompt, with the history of the thread being made visible to the reader. Not the experience I want.

Best used for: Initial research as the outgoing links are immediately apparent as to whether it’s a reliable resource. Also for generating short blocks of content (aka nothing like ebooks, closer to EDMs and/or short bursts of copy).
